GREATON BREAKS GROUND ON $200 MILLION ADELAIDE GPO HOTEL
The Premier of South Australia, Steven Marshall, was on hand today to officially break ground on the $200 million, 285-room Adelaide GPO Hotel, alongside Greaton Development Managing Director Nicho Teng.
Construction of the 16-level luxury hotel, which will be operated by Marriott International, has commenced and is expected to welcome its first guests in 2023.
The Adelaide GPO Hotel will become the first hotel operated in South Australia by the world’s largest hotel company, Marriott International.
The property will incorporate 285 large guest rooms, including a Presidential Suite, Club Lounge, signature restaurants and bars, swimming pool and fitness centre, plus function and conference rooms. Guests will enjoy the elegance of the historic GPO building and sweeping views across Adelaide city, Adelaide Hills and the metropolitan coastline.
Nicho Teng, Managing Director of Greaton, said the GPO Hotel is set to become Adelaide’s landmark hotel by seamlessly integrating the heritage of the city’s historic former General Post Office building with a contemporary tower.
“The hotel will provide a new level of quality and comfort for future guests and the convenience of being right in the heart of the city,” said Mr Teng.
“Our development of the GPO Hotel is a major vote of confidence in the South Australian tourism industry and will provide a significant boost to the State’s economy, employing more than 600 people during construction and creating a further 250 ongoing jobs when the hotel opens.
“I’d particularly like to thank the state government and all the stakeholders for their support over the past year as we tackled the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic to keep the project moving ahead, which has allowed us to commence construction.”
Premier, Steven Marshall congratulated Greaton and Marriott International on the ground-breaking ceremony today.
“This project is a real coup for our city,” Premier Marshall said. “Not only will it create 850 local jobs over the life of the project, it will add another luxury hotel to the Adelaide CBD offerings – helping to attract more interstate tourists to our great city.”
Richard Crawford, Senior Development Director, Marriott International said the group is delighted to be partnering with longstanding partner Greaton to bring the first Marriott International hotel to South Australia.
“Expanding Marriott International’s presence into Adelaide is a strategically important advancement for our company as we are very confident that South Australia will see strong future tourism growth,” said Mr Crawford.
“Hotels under Marriott International’s 30 global brands enjoy a loyal following around the world and our new foothold in Adelaide will attract new leisure and corporate visitors to the city from interstate and overseas.”
Construction of the GPO Hotel is expected to take around two years with the GPO Hotel to open and expected to welcome its first guests in 2023.
The $200 million GPO Hotel is one of three major projects in South Australia for Greaton including the $300 million West Franklin residential development and the planned $40 million resort at Wirra Wirra winery.
